Charlie Hands Haywood Play-Calling
8th Feb 2008

Charlie Weis announced in his press conference earlier today that he will no longer be calling the plays for the offense. He has given this power to offensive coordinator Michael Haywood. Haywood has been a coach for the Irish since Weis’ arrival in 2005, and he also played for Notre Dame in the 80s, earning four varsity letters. In his first year as an assistant on Charlie’s staff (2005), he was named NCAA Division 1-A Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association. This decision will allow Weis to spend more time with the players, special teams, defense, and let the offensive staff have a chance at controlling the offense. Charlie also announced that Brian Polian will be the special teams coach, and the special teams coach only, no longer a part of the defensive staff. Weis will be his assistant and has even set up a meeting to talk with Frank Beamer of Virginia Tech, who in Charlie’s opinion, runs the best special teams system in the nation. Obviously, there have been a lot of changes so far and most likely more to come. Congratulations Haywood and as always, Go Irish!

I believe this is an excellent decision. It allows CW to concentrate on QB development, and with young personnel like Clausen, Crist, and Montana at that position that is needed.

Absolutely. I completely agree. That is what Charlie is known for and this will allow him to have a lot more time with the quarterbacks. Everything is looking up in ND Nation.
